About the position

The Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Technician at Southwest Airlines plays a crucial role in maintaining the operational efficiency of the airline by performing mechanical maintenance work on various types of equipment. This position is integral to the airline's mission of connecting people through reliable and low-cost air travel. The GSE Technician is responsible for the upkeep of automotive, ramp, provisioning, and deicing equipment, which includes tasks such as dismantling, repairing, fabricating, welding, altering, and painting equipment. In this role, the technician will engage in both preventative and unscheduled maintenance, ensuring that all ground equipment is in optimal working condition. The technician will also be required to attend initial and ongoing training to stay current with the latest knowledge and skills necessary for the job. This position requires the ability to create and track work orders in a maintenance tracking program, ensuring that all tasks are completed in a timely manner. The technician must also adhere to safety regulations and company policies, including wearing a company identification card for recognition. The GSE Technician position is a union-based role, which means that shifts will be assigned based on seniority. This may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or have current authorization to work in the U.S., as there is no sponsorship available for work authorization. Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and repairs various types of automotive, ramp, provisioning, and deicing equipment utilized within the airline industry
  • Performs both preventative maintenance and unscheduled maintenance on all airline ground equipment
  • Attends initial and ongoing training (classroom and/or on-the-job) to maintain proficiency in their work
  • Creates and tracks work orders performed in a timely manner into maintenance tracking program
  • Wears Company visual identification card, prominently displayed above the waist for ready recognition
  • Meets any physical ability requirements listed in the job description
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5 years of heavy truck and/or equipment repair experience
  • 3 years of heavy truck and/or equipment repair experience with a technical degree
  • Proficiency in the maintenance and repair of electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to perform minor or major body repair
  • Ability to read documents, follow instructions, and understand procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to read and research technical manuals and electrical & hydraulic schematics
  • Ability to work under tight time constraints
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and verbal form
  • Ability to work well under stressful situations
  • Ability to work well with others as part of a Team
  • Proficiency in arc, gas, and MIG welding, as well as cutting torch
  • Proficiency in metal fabrication
  • Proficiency in equipment spray painting

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's Degree or automotive/equipment repair technical degree
  • Experience using a computer inventory tracking system
  • ASE and A/C Certification preferred
